My First CrossFit Hero WOD – Badger
Crossfit, Real Life, Workout

So first and foremost, I know there are guaranteed to be a lot of terminology questions with this subject line… I apologize for that and I promise I’ll explain them, along with some other things, in this post.

1. What’s a WOD?

This is something I definitely should have gone over earlier… a WOD is the CrossFit term for “Workout Of (the) Day”. Or, as we like to call it, the Torture of the Day. It can include anything from just a series of intense, general calisthenics to additional crazy things like throwing tires or jumping on super high boxes or Olympic (Oly) Lifting.

2. What’s a “Hero WOD”?

A Hero WOD is a specially programmed workout that’s named after a fallen US war veteran, who was somehow tied to the CrossFit community – typically he was a CrossFitter. These are usually very long WODs and they’re incredibly intense.

 3. How Many Hero WODS Are There & Which Hero WOD Did You Do?

Accordind to CrossFit.com there are 104 Hero WODs currently in the books. If you’re interested in checking them out, you can access the entire list, including short bios of the Heros, here.

The Hero WOD that my Box, CrossFit Nassau, completed on the 4th of July, was Badger.

4. What is Badger?

Badger consists of 3 rounds of the following:

30 Squat Cleans (95 lbs)

30 Pullups

800 Meter Run

What you see above is what’s considered the prescribed workout… or the Rx. I’m still nowhere near that caliber of fitness, so here’s what I did:

3 rounds of the following:

30 Squat Cleans (35 lbs)

30 Pullups (Black AND Green Bands)

800 Meter Run (Sub Rowing)

I completed the workout in 38:05, which was actually WAY better than I anticipated, so I’m really pleased. I don’t think, aside from machine cardio, that I’ve ever done a workout that long before. I’m absolutely looking forward to the day when I can complete something like this Rx, but just being able to do what I did really gave me motivation to keep working and pushing forward. So. Hype.

In Related News…

Speaking of things that make me hype…

On Monday we did 1rm of a front squat, and while I’m bummed out that I set a goal once I started that I didn’t reach, I’m SUPER proud to be able to say that my 1rm of a front squat is 155, which is 6 pounds OVER MY BODYWEIGHT.

Holy. Eff.

Seriously, to me, that’s awesome.

I can’t wait for more.
